In Botswana, art is a profession many have come to respect and is
growing fast into a recognized career path. Many young and old local
artists have become well known in recent years, amongst these is
MOGOROSI MODISANE fondly known as Modesane.
A
teacher, a coach, a leader and most importantly an artist, Modisane has
established himself as a fine artist renowned in Botswana and the
Southern African region. His works are mainly expressed through a
complex combination of colour, line and shape, in abstract. Working
mainly with leather, Hessian or canvas in the form of cubism, but his
talents are not limited to the 2D art form; he also has a talent for
ceramics and produces life size sculptures from clay.
Artwork
Originally a sculptor, Modisane derived his inspiration to create fine
art in the form of paintings in his later teens and developed the skill
during his teacher training. His artwork is an amalgam of cubism mixed
some traditional Tswana art. Traditionally, Tswana art used simple
shapes and earth to create images, Modisane has found a way of embedding
colour and texture to create his works which fuse two age old techniques
to produce his own unique style on canvas, Hessian and leather. His
subject matter, women, are the inspiring force in his artwork and his
works tend to depict if not in the literal sense then in the symbolic
sense women. He infuses in his artwork images of women, pottery or
symbolism of women as he feels a large part of life is attributed to
women and he finds in them inspiration.
Exhibitions
Modisane’s work has become famous generally due to his active
participation in exhibitions. Since 2000 his works have been on display
at various exhibitions including the University of Botswana exhibition
